Huxley wrote: "the biogeographer will have to discount the fact that he is dealing mainly with processes irrelevant to the major trends of evolution regarded as a long-range process." (Evolution the Modern Synthesis, page 31) Mayr strove to show that this was false because it is the individual and not the genes that are selected but panbiogeography need not necessarily reject this but note in truth that Huxley's reason for saying this, "since there are more rare than abundant species" has a consequence in panbiogeography less available to Mayr's viewpoint.. Not only do rare endemic species often indicate large trends in small spaces but when multiple local "rare" species distributions are replicated as generalized tracks across many phyla this often is the long-range process. Whether selection (gene. individual, group) or orthogenesis is the particular cause can be pursued from this Croizat statistical regularity.  That is what came out backwards that the Croizat methodological approach reverses.  It does!!
